2008 SHOW

May Show News
WOW! What a Show! Our May Show is now over and packed back into the shed and I am in the recovery mode.  We had great attendance, each year the crowds seem to grow. Set-up and take down went fast and smoothly. We had a great auction! Kim and his helpers raised over $2000 that will go toward our building fund. We sold out of grab bags (about 850 of them) about 3PM Saturday. GMS
bags and hats were also available at the Hospitality table.

Things went smoothly, the biggest problem being a parking problem with our crowd and the patrons for the theater.  I would like to say a big Thank You to all who helped to make this show a success!! It takes a small army of people to pull the show off! Unfortunately, I do not have room to list everyone who helped at the show. GMS and I do appreciate all the hard work you all did for the show. Your
efforts are what made this show a success!!

I do need to recognize our Committee Chairs and their helpers for the hard work they did:
Thanks go to everyone who helped with the Set Up and Take Down. By the time I get all my stuff
packed up, all our helpers had all the GMS stuff torn down, packed up and the trailer about loaded
and ready to take back to the shed.

Thanks go Ginger, Pam and all helpers for the feading us on Thursday night at the Dealer Dinner.
The food was wonderful as always and we had plenty left over to munch on all show. Thanks goes
also to all who brought dishes for the dinner.

Thanks go to Tom for coordinating our Display Cases. We had 14 displays (if I counted right) and they all looked great! It was great seeing all the displays. Thanks to all the exhibitors who put in a display. Congratulations go to Kim Cochran for winning the display contest. Jay Batcha came in second with Anita Westlake close behind in third.

Thanks go to Kim Cochran and all his stuffers for making the grab bags to sell. A special thanks also
goes to our bag makers. The cloth bags sell much better than paper bags. As you go rock hunting
thru the year, remember GMS, we need to start collecting material for next year’s grab bags.

Thanks go to Kim Cochran, Mary Porter and all the helpers for the successful auction. We collected
over $2000 for our building fund!

Thanks go to John Trimble for bringing his microscope and equipment for all three days of the show and coordinating the demonstration area..

Thanks to John, Anita, Barbara, the Jarretts, and Jay for giving demonstrations.  Thanks go to Margaret and all her helpers who worked at the Hospitality Table, sold grab bags and GMS shopping bags and answered questions. A special thanks goes to Richard, Chris and Shirley for all the shifts they covered for us.

I want to say a big THANKS to Martha Brown for all her hard work as Dealer Chair. I think that we had a fine mix of Dealers, and other members and Dealers said the same It is time for Martha and I to take a break. Martha has been Dealer Chair as long as I have been Show Chair. After 10 years, it is time to let someone else be in charge for a while. Kim has agreed to take the Show Chair position and Anita will be our new Dealer Chair. The show is in good shape and will be in capable hands. We are always
looking at ways of improving the show and are talking about improving the show layout to make it easier get around, any ideas and comments are always welcome.

As we look forward toward our next show, we will need many volunteers. Please say YES!!, when asked to help.  Better than that, find the spot that you want and VOLUNTEER!! We need and can all ways use new and more helpers, after all this is YOUR show. Let Kim know where you would like to volunteer to help.

F.Y.I.

The shows in May and December are the only fund raising events in which GMS participates.  We spend more money on publishing the "Tips and Trips" than is collected from membership fees.  We donate money each year to a scholarship fund for junior high schools.  We eventually hope to have the money to purchase a building for our meetings and to use as a workshop.  GMS has lapidary equipment that is in storage because we have no place to set up and teach classes.  When we ask for help at the shows, even if only to come and participate in the auctions, it will only benefit the club, not some imaginary clique.  Please do not be offended by this article, please be active in GMS.
